Bana Yirriji Art Centre is located in Wujal Wujal Community. Our studio and gallery opened in 2011 and is situated alongside the spectacular Bloomfield River, in two World Heritage listed areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics, FNQ.

Our artists draw their inspiration from culture and deep connection to Country.

This is a truly spectacular and special place. We hope you can visit us soon.

We’re supporting Australia’s Indigenous Visual Arts.

Through extensive consultation with the sector, the Morrison Government’s Indigenous Visual Arts Action Plan will do this by:

📡 Connecting up to 80 arts centres to the NBN
🎨 Providing business training for independent artists
📱A national rollout of digitally labelling artworks with QR codes to inform consumers

We are so proud of senior artist Lila Creek. Her beautiful 'Baral' (tracks) paintings were recently included in the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair exhibition Where's Your Permit? at the Tanks Art Centre in Cairns.

"Baral", 2021, acrylic on linen, 76.2cm x 101.6cm. (i & ii)

"Our bubu (country) is like a storybook. Baral (tracks) tell you what animal is travelling around. Some of the tracks we see are from the kurriyala (snake), walkarr (lizard) and kadar (wallaby). We can track the animals we hunt by following their tracks. The waybala (whitefella) has bought new tracks into our country, shoes and mudaka (motorcar) and plenty of bulki (cattle). Im painting the bird and animal tracks you find on the beach. You can see them going this way and that way. Everywhere!

During COVID-19 Wujal Wujal had to go in lockdown like everywhere else in Australia. It was really lovely, not so many tourists. We had the beaches to ourselves." Lila Creek 2021

"I am painting kunjuri (shield). Our ancestors use

"I am painting kunjuri (shield). Our ancestors used kunjuri and wakay (sword) for fighting to protect themselves from getting hurt. I started watching my grandfather paint when I was 12 years old. He taught me a lot about my culture, and this is why I am interested in kunjuri. My kunjuri are abstracted. When the Missionaries came here to Wujal Wujal; they tried to stop my people from speaking language and practising our traditions and because of this we lost some of the knowledge. However, the old people were very strong and even though it was very hard they carried our culture despite the Missionaries and kept it strong.”

Jalunji artist Josie Olbar is a saltwater woman. This painting was created during the IACA Belonging workshop and is about about caring for country.

"I recently went on a field trip to the reef with the Jabalbina Rangers. They help manage land and sea country around Wujal Wujal. We saw dolphins, turtles and lots of fish. We did some fishing too. We were checking the health of the reef. There is coral bleaching happening in some areas. We need to look after our country to ensure it’s here for our children, grandchildren and future generations. We have looked after our country for thousands of years. We know all the animals and plants.
