In December 2023, Cyclone Jasper wreaked havoc on

In December 2023, Cyclone Jasper wreaked havoc on the Wujal Wujal Community, causing widespread destruction, including the Bana Yirriji Art Centre building and necessitating urgent evacuations to Cooktown.

Despite the immense challenges, we have been heartened by the outpouring of support from entities such as Arts Queensland, the Office for the Arts, the Indigenous Art Centre Alliance, the Cairns Regional Shire Council, and many others. While plans for reconstruction are in motion, the process will inevitably require considerable time and resources.

As an interim solution, the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council is taking steps to acquire a portable building for the art centre.

Through the collective resilience and assistance of all involved, the community will recover. We thank everyone for their ongoing support during this challenging period.

Dear Friends,

We will be closed until further notice. We are extremely grateful that everyone is safe and floodwaters are receding.

Unfortunately, the art centre building was also impacted. It is too soon to understand the extent of the damage and we won't know for some time.

Thank you for all your messages, we greatly appreciate your concern and support.

Update: unfortunately, Cyclone Jasper has not move

Update: unfortunately, Cyclone Jasper has not moved on as first expected. Wujal Wujal has experienced catastrophic flooding. Everyone is safe, but our community has been heavily impacted as has the entire region. It's devastating to see so much destruction.

Hi Everyone,
Many thanks for all your kind messages regarding Cyclone Jasper.

Everyone in Wujal Wujal is ok.
We were lucky that the system dropped south of us and the winds stopped around 11pm last night. Luckily, we didn't lose power but did received a lot of rain and some tree damage.

Our thoughts and prayers are with our friends and family in Mossman and Port Douglas who recived the brunt of the cylone and terrible flooding.

'When I was growing up as a kid and living in Mossman with my family, we used to hunt for Ngangkin. We would see them all the time, on the side of the road digging. There are not so many around anymore and people don’t hunt them as much'.
