When I was a little girl my grandmother told me how they used to weave Balji (dillybags) from black palm and grasses so they could carry food collected from the Jalun (ocean) and rainforest.

My paintings represent my grandmother’s Balji . I wanted to understand more about Kuku Yalanji weaving techniques after seeing an old photo of my grandmother with her Balji that was taken during the Mission Times.

I did some research by looking at historical photos of women with their dillybags taken during the Bloomfield Mission times, and images of Wujal Wujal weaving in museum collections and the state library.

I would like to learn how to weave using traditional materials like my grandmother.
